Stenwood Farewell from Ms. Fucile

Dear Stenwood Parents and Students,

When I first moved to Fairfax County in 1996 (“The 1900s!” as a 4th grader recently pointed out), I interviewed for a 3-day-a-week music position at a sweet little school in Vienna. My plan was to get my masters degree at George Mason, and then move back to Virginia Beach, where I’d been teaching for 7 years prior. Instead, I fell in love with the school, community, and Fairfax County, and have been lucky enough to teach music at Stenwood for 28 years now!

But after 35 years in the music classroom, it’s time for a new chapter.

I’ll be forever grateful to the Stenwood community for not just saying, but *showing* how important music education is to them. I remember when we had parents submit requests to our new principal (3 principals ago!), one request simply read, “Whatever you do, do NOT compromise our Music program!” Our music program has flourished because our parents and administration have consistently demonstrated their support.

Getting to see two generations and thousands of young eyes light up as they’ve lifted their voices in song together, whether in a kindergarten musical, Heritage Festival, chorus concert, whole school assembly, or just when learning a new song in Music class, has been one of the greatest gifts of my career. The other has been the friendships forged here, which I know will remain. I am excited for my next chapter, but am going to miss my students and all of you very much. Thank you for sharing your children with us, and for continuing to support Stenwood’s music program for many more years to come!

Warmly,

Marti Fucile
